Fire pump control unit components

Overview

ShAU-PN control cabinets are used to regulate the operation of pumping equipment in fire extinguishing systems equipped with standard asynchronous electric motors. Their operation is coordinated by signals received from an external control device.

How the device works

The device supports two control modes: manual and automatic. Switching between them is accomplished using a dedicated toggle switch located on the front of the cabinet.

When manual mode is selected, the operator controls the pumps directly using the Start/Stop buttons located on the front panel. The current system status is displayed on the indicator.

Automatic mode requires control via an external signal. Signal sources can be:

  • fire control panel (FCP);
  • fire control panel (FCP) of any model;
  • remote start devices (RSD).

The pump can be started in automatic mode in two ways:

  1. Supplying a 24 VDC control voltage to the cabinet terminal block from an external source. An example would be using the potential output of the FCP or FCP.
  2. Supplying a 24 VDC voltage from the cabinet`s built-in power supply. This requires closing an external dry contact - For example, through the potential-free output of the control panel/control panel or the contacts of the control panel.

The electric motor stops in two cases:

  • when the control voltage is removed from the cabinet terminal block;
  • when the mode switch is moved to the "Lock" position.

Emergency Response

If critical faults occur, the system promptly responds as follows:

  • If the cable lines connected to the electric motor are broken or if a short circuit occurs, the following occurs:

    • emergency motor shutdown;
    • the "Emergency" control contact is closed;
    • the corresponding indicator on the cabinet front panel is activated.
  • In the event of power supply failures (loss of one phase, phase imbalance over 40%, incorrect phasing for SHAU-PN-380 models), the system:

    • closes the contact "Alarm";
    • Opens the "Power Normal" contact;
    • Displays the alarm status via the front panel indicator.

Cabinets with Dual Power Supply

Models with built-in ATS (marked with the suffix "B", for example: SHAU-PN-380B-1-010-54):

  • In the event of a break, phase loss, or incorrect phasing, they automatically switch to the backup input;
  • When the main power supply is restored, they return to the original power supply mode.

Models with two inputs without a built-in ATS(marking with the suffix "B2", for example: SHAU-PN-380B2-2-010-54):

  • Provide power to each pump from a separate input (for example, from two distribution panels);
  • Contain an ATS for the cabinet control circuit.

Cabinets with a soft start function

Frequent direct starts negatively affect the life of the electric motor:

  • Cause overheating of the windings;
  • Accelerate the aging of the insulation;
  • reduce the service life of the unit (and it`s not the accumulated service life that`s critical, but the total number of starts).

With direct connection, the starting current reaches 6-7 times the nominal value. A soft starter reduces this value to 2-3 times the nominal value.

Advantages of a soft starter:

  • minimizes mechanical wear of pumping equipment;
  • prevents water hammer;
  • reduces the load on the electrical network during start-up.

Models with a soft starter are marked with the suffix "P" (for example:ШАУ-ПН-380-1-010-54П).

Cabinets with variable frequency drives

Frequency converters are used in complex, branched fire extinguishing systems where it is necessary to:

  • limit water intake relative to the maximum design value;
  • maintain stable pressure;
  • prevent pump operation under extremely high pressure conditions.

Operating Features:

  • the main pump is controlled via a frequency converter;
  • ensures precise performance control;
  • implements a soft start and stop engine.

Such cabinets are designated with the suffix "Ч" (for example: ШАУ-ПН-380-1-010-54Ч).

Compliance with regulatory requirements

ШАУ-ПН cabinets comply with the provisions of the technical regulations on fire safety (Federal Law of July 22, 2008 No. 123-FZ, GOST R 53325-2012). Implemented:

  • Integrity monitoring of power lines connecting the cabinet to the electric motor (if a line is broken, an "Alarm" signal and corresponding indication are activated);
  • Protection of control elements from unauthorized tampering.

Expanding the Cabinet`s Capabilities: Available Options

The basic cabinet configuration can be supplemented with a number of functional modules — possible upgrade options are listed below.

Front Panel Equipment

The user can order the following measuring instruments:

  • Ammeter (with switch) — designed to monitor the current of one electric motor;
  • Voltmeter (with switch) — allows you to monitor the voltage at one power input.

Climate and Design Modifications

Various enclosure designs are available, adapted to specific operating conditions:

  1. Climate version UHL1
    • Suitable for outdoor use. Operating temperature range: from -60°C to +40°C.
  2. Climate version UHL2
    • Designed for operation under a canopy (without direct exposure to sunlight or precipitation) or in an unheated room. Permissible temperature range: from -40°C to +40°C.
  3. Special enclosure design
    • The cabinet is manufactured in a metal enclosure painted red (RAL3000 standard).
