Grohe 2017Grohe AG, the world's leading supplier of plumbing fittings, received the 2017 CSR Award of the German Federal Government on January 24 in the category "companies with 1,000 employees or more." The decision of the eleven expert judges highlighted the role of GROHE's management in making sustainability a top management issue, acting as role models and pioneers for its employees and for other companies alike. Other nominees in this category included Unilever Deutschland GmbH, Flughafen München GmbH, Ford-Werke GmbH and FRoSTA AG. The award was presented by Professor Josef Wieland, member of the jury and business ethics expert at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen.

"Sustainability is a passion of ours that is deeply ingrained in our DNA. We are pleased to see that the world around us recognizes our enthusiasm and commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Our 360-degree approach to sustainability embraces our employees, suppliers, plants, processes and our contribution to society in equal measure. Seeing our policies become a benchmark for our industry and inspire others makes us feel justified and honored at the same time," said Michael Rauterkus, CEO of Grohe AG, receiving the award at the event at Berlin's Humboldt Carré.

Products for a sustainable future - the "Made in Germany" championship
The sustainability strategy pursued by this international company is primarily reflected in its products. One example is the GROHE Blue Home water system, which transforms tap water into filtered, chilled water that tastes great - and even bubbles. This system eliminates the use of bottled mineral water and the associated processing, bottling and transportation. According to a study conducted at Georg-August University in Göttingen, GROHE Blue Home reduces the carbon footprint of a household by 60% compared to conventional bottled water.

Board Member Thomas Fuhr explains, "Our understanding of quality and our achievements in sustainability are largely driven by our commitment to producing in Germany. To ensure our company's future competitiveness, we continue to invest heavily in our German facilities, which set the standard for our international plants. Since 2011 we have held regular internal competitions between our production sites for the GROHE Sustainability Trophy. This prize recognizes the efforts of our employees and encourages them to continue working on ideas and solutions for even more environmentally friendly production processes and even more resource-efficient production of a given product.

Beyond day-to-day operations
GROHE's belief in corporate citizenship is embodied in the GROHE Dual Tech program in cooperation with Don Bosco Mondo e.V. The two partners have joined forces to offer vocational training to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in emerging countries. Three training seminars in India and the Philippines help young people improve their life chances by training for a profession in the plumbing sector. This entitles them to employment in a promising industry and even allows some of them to open their own businesses in the future.

Moving forward with clearly defined sustainability goals
GROHE has set itself the goal of increasing energy efficiency by 20 percent and reducing its carbon footprint by 20 percent by 2020. In particular, this will be achieved through two new cogeneration plants commissioned in Hemer and Lara and the conversion of the lighting equipment to LEDs. Another milestone was reached in December, when the company's energy management system was certified according to ISO 50001; it will play an important role in improving overall energy efficiency on an ongoing basis. In addition, the company has pledged to become a global sustainability leader in the plumbing industry by 2020.

GROHE's sustainability position and actions are outlined in more detail in the company's sustainability brochure. The brochure entitled "WATER ENJOYMENT - A CLEAN CONSCIENCE WITH EVERY DROP" can be downloaded at http:// www.grohe.com/sustainability.
